  1. YAY! I am already subscribed! And my experience would have to be a couple of years ago in the Philippines dining on the Philippine cuisine in the open markets and small restaurants. My favorite dessert there became mango pie. My mouth is watering just thinking of it. They use mangoes in everything! So delicious! So fresh! So yummy! The fish & rice were unbelievably fresh as well. Now I am hungry. Thank you very much! 🙂

  2. One of my most memorable dining experiences: when I was living in L.A. and had basically grown up plain old fast food, frozen food, supermarket brands..my boyfriend and I went to lunch at the home of a couple who grew their own vegetables. They made a simple salad for lunch with fresh tomatoes and veggies from the garden and it was like nothing I had ever tasted. Opened my eyes to what real food is!

  3. I subscribed. I would have to say that one of my most memorable experiences eating out was in Alaska when I lived up there in Anchorage. I went to a little pub on 5th ave and there was a Scottish guy in a kilt playing the bagpipes while we sampled all different micro brews and fried seafood.

  4. My other unique dining experience was at a little cafe in Hawaii. It was the kind of place with live poetry readings and local musicians. The night I went there was a guy playing the acoustic guitar. The food was excellent, but served casual- on a frisbee. I stuffed myself then walked down to Waikiki beach to sit in the sand and listen to the waves roll in.

  5. I thought of a second dining experience. When we were dating, my husband made me dinner at his place many years ago; it was a fabulous fettucine alfredo made from scratch and it was delicious. He’s never made it again since, but I don’t think it could ever be any better than that romantic date dinner!

  6. My most memorable dining experience was in Morocco at a place where they had live belly dancing while we ate. The memorable part though was that they served pigeon pie. I’m still not quite sure what exactly pigeon pie is/was but it was an experience.

  7. Another very memorable experience was at an Italian restaurant in downtown Minneapolis for a business dinner. We sat at the chef’s table and had like 5 courses, each paired with wine, where the chef came out and explained each dish and the wines that were paired. So cool

  8. I wasn’t subscribed to your blog before, but I am now. Just signed up to get your emails! This is a great giveaway. I love everyone’s dining stories. I’ll add a couple of mine, too.

  9. OK, first story. I used to live in LA, and there is a really fun 50’s style diner on Santa Monica Blvd. Well, my boyfriend and I lived near there, so we began eating there from time to time. One of the big attractions was that we could play Battleship over dinner. The other was that they served fabulous milkshakes. Well, one night we were there, and we first noticed all the games were gone. Then suddenly it dawned on us that everyone there was wearing pajamas! What’s up! It turned out the Cafe hosted a pajama night once a month, and if you came dressed in the right sort of pajamas, you got your meal free (not totally free, but sorta). So of course, we had to join the fun, and we were pretty religious about going to pajama night for the remaining time we lived there. We always walked to the restaurant in our pajamas, and sometimes passers-by asked about it, so I guess we might have ended up sending more customers their way.

  10. Second story: This one is set in France, so not surprisingly, it involves … oops, I’d better slow down now … before I ruin the punchline. So on to my story.

To start from the beginning, my hubby and I had a summer between jobs, and we decided to go hiking in southern France and northern Spain. We hiked a medieval pilgrimage route, known as the Camino de Santiago in Spanish (The Way of St. James). While we were still in France, we had to pass through what the guidebooks called the 60 Kilometer Causse (dun, dun, dun). Hikers/pilgrims were warned to be particularly cautious in preparing their supplies, as there would be NO water and NO food available for a whopping sixty kilometers. (My hubby who’d done lots of wilderness hiking thought this was hilarious.) But we duly loaded up with water and enough food to last us the 2-3 days to get through the dreaded Causse. Well, end of day One in the Causse, low and behold, we end up in a small town with a swimming pool, an ice cream machine, and, best of all, one of the most delicious restaurants we ate in during the entire trip (and that’s saying a lot, we were in France, after all!) And it was my hubby’s birthday. So much for the dangerous and dreaded Causse. I’d go back there any day. It was wonderful.

So, I guess you had no idea when I started to recount this story that it would end up being about great food, huh! Totally out of left field — ha, ha, ha.
